Southport Chapel Street box opened in 1917 and on the Liverpool line worked to Southport South box, on the Wigan line. St.Lukes signal box was the adjacent box in 1918. The Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co. Ltd produced the Style 'B' mechanically locked lever frame was from 1902, the Style 'B' was developed from the style 'A' in 1902 with the first installed at Harton Colliery in Dec 1902. Although the K had been introduced in 1912, and there is not much difference between the two, these were only used abroad until 1923. The style 'K' of course was designated to be the "all-electric" version whereas the style 'B' had first been designed for electro-pneumatic sites which Southport was. The frame was formed of 6 x 12 way sections and 2 x 8 way sections which making a total of 81 levers, 69 working levers, there were 12 spare levers and 6 spaces. |

| Adjacent boxes Southport Chapel Street to Wigan Line St. Lukes box became the adjacent box in 1918. St. Lukes box was closed on 30th November 1969 when Bescar Lane box (4m 372yds away) became the adjacent box. Bescar Lane box was closed on 9th May 1993 and Burscough Bridge Junction box (7m 1014yds away) became the adjacent box. Southport Chapel Street to Liverpool line {Up / down Birkdale} The Up & Down Birdale lines are located in the lower part of the track drawing, Southport South box was the original adjacent signal box (257yds away) until closed on 4th December 1996 Birkdale box became the next adjacent box (1687yds away) until closed on 11 March 1994. Merseyrail IECC became the adjacent box until Southport Chapel Street box closed on 20th March 1994. |
