London Bridge was opened by the Southern Railway on 17th June 1928. It was an non standard 3 story all-brick structure built to a similar outline as the Southern Railway Type 11 and 12 designs, and was fitted with a 311 lever Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co. Ltd. Style 'K' style frame. On the 19th Aril 1969 the Brighton Bell was an unusual visitor having been diverted from Victoria.The coloured light signals are visible. The lever frame controlled 216 signals, and 79 sets of points, also provided were 2 illuminated track diagrams. London Bridge was and still is a terminus station with 4 through tacks to Cannon Street and Charing Cross stations. | The frame is a Westinghouse Style 'K' Power Frame which was mechanically interlocked. The weight of the London Bridge lever frame weighing in at 23 tons for its 311 levers. This kind of weight at 23 tons needed a very strong mechanical support for the lever frame itself to ensure that the frame did not twist or become mis-aligned at any time so that the mechanical lever locking could never be compromised and cause what is know quoloqly as a wrong side failure. Most of the mechanical locking was supported and maintained in the interlocking room on the floor immediately below the lever frame. | The Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co. Ltd lever frame, with its indicators behind the levers, the 4 glass roundels showed the signal aspect, being Red, Yellow, Green & 2nd Yellow reading from bottom to top. The The Walkers Rotary train describers sending boxes are fitted on top of the frame box whilst the receiving train describer units are housed between the signalling diagrams. The London End of the frame only had a limited number of The Walkers Rotary train describers are only 4 platform lines carrying onto Borough Market Junction Signalbox area. | When London Bridge opened it replaced the following signal boxes, London Bridge "A", a South Eastern & Chatham Railway box, London Bridge "B", a South Eastern & Chatham Railway box opened on 25/05/1902, and fitted with a 148 lever frame, London Bridge "C" a South Eastern & Chatham Railway box opened on 13/04/1902, and fitted with a 47 lever frame, London Bridge North, a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway box opened in 1878 (probably a Saxby & Farmer design), and fitted with a Saxby & Farmer '1874 Patent Rocker & Gridiron' frame consisting of two 140 lever frames which were interlocked using common interlocking, London Bridge South, a Saxby & Farmer Type 5 design box opened in 1878 for the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway, and fitted with a 98 lever Saxby & Farmer '1874 Patent Rocker & Gridiron' frame, Up Croydon Line Junction, a South Eastern & Chatham Railway box opened on 28/09/1902, and fitted with a 12 lever frame, Abbey Street, a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway box opened on 19/10/1909, and fitted with a 22 lever frame, St. James' Road, a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway box opened on 19/10/1909, and was fitted with a 23 lever frame, South Bermondsey Junction, a London, Brighton & South Coast Railway box opened in 1875, and fitted with a 56 frame |
